Why Shopify Payments doesn't work for CBD

Shopify Payments is powered by Stripe. Stripe's restricted businesses policy explicitly prohibits "cannabidiol (CBD) products." Shopify inherits this prohibition. Hemp merchants who try to use Shopify Payments get flagged by Stripe's risk systems within 30–90 days and frozen, 90-day fund holds, terminated merchant status, possible MATCH placement.

The third-party gateway workaround

Shopify permits third-party payment gateways for verticals Shopify Payments doesn't serve. You install the gateway under Settings → Payments and Shopify routes checkout to the external processor. Your storefront stays 100% Shopify: theme, products, cart, order management, shipping, email flows. Only the card-capture step runs through our gateway.
